WHERE SCIENCE SPARKS POSSIBILITY
The Department of Chemistry at Rhodes University is one of the institution’s oldest and most respected academic departments, with a proud legacy that dates back to 1904 when Professor George Cory was appointed as one of the university’s founding professors.
Today, the department remains a dynamic hub of scientific learning and innovation, combining a strong tradition of academic excellence with a forward-thinking approach to teaching and research.
As the “central science,” Chemistry at Rhodes forms a vital link between disciplines such as Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, and Geology, offering students both foundational and advanced understanding of the molecular world.
The department’s mission is rooted in promoting excellence, nurturing leadership, and equipping graduates to meet the educational, social, environmental, and technological challenges of modern society.
Through its diverse programmes and research opportunities, the Rhodes Chemistry Department continues to prepare students for impactful careers in research, industry, education, and beyond.
